Reproductive Psychology: A Comprehensive Year-Long Training (Live, Interactive)

Dates: First Wednesday 12:45pm-4pm EST of each month from September 2024-June 2025

30 CE total credits are available for all mental health providers (psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, and counselors). Social workers completing this course will receive 24 clinical, 3 ethics, and 3 social and cultural competence continuing education credits.

Participation in all training sessions and submission of a course evaluation is required to receive a CE Certificate for this course. Course evaluations are made available after each live session
have been completed. After completing the course, participants will be emailed their CE certificates.

Class 1: The ABC’s of ART

  1. Describe the multiple ways to build a family using both genetic and non-genetic materials, as a way to help inform clients who might not be able to create their family without interventions.
  2.  Distinguish how the emotional impact of a reproductive journey is experienced differently and the ways that this can impact an individual as well as a couple.
  3.   Apply developmental frameworks, such as Erik Erikson, to the reproductive journey.

Class 2: Theoretical Models of Working with Reproductive Health

  1. Compare psychological theoretical models (cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic, and narrative) and how they might provide a clinical framework when working with this population.
  2.   Critique the limitations of each theoretical model with this population.
  3.   Explain how working within a modality of couple’s therapy may have advantages or disadvantages.

Class 3: Recipient Consultations

  1. Utilize a framework for providing consultation for those seeking out the use of third-party gametes.
  2. Identify the ethical expectations from the perspectives of both the psychologist as well as the intended parents.
  3. Describe the unique aspects of parenting a third-party conceived child.

Class 4: Pregnancy Loss

  1. Identify the many types of ways that pregnancy loss can be experienced.
  2. Describe the nuances to each type of pregnancy loss experience.
  3. Demonstrate the complexities of how different genders process these losses

Class 5: Post-Treatment Considerations

  1.   Assist clients discern when it might make sense for them to end treatment.
  2.   Demonstrate the variety of ways that a person can heal from an infertility or loss journey that does not include actively parenting their own child.
  3.   Apply tools that can benefit clients that are managing a pregnancy after loss scenario.

Class 6: Cultural Aspects and Additional Considerations

  1.   Identify the unique role that culture can play in discerning reproductive choices and how this can potentially be problematic when people are seeking out ART.
  2.   Demonstrate how religion can be both a barrier and a facilitator for ART.
  3.   Assess how “invisible cultures” via social media can play myriad roles in people’s treatment.

Class 7: Birth Trauma

  1. Identify the various forms of birth trauma
  2.   Utilize different treatment modalities as a way to process and assist in healing from birth trauma
  3.   Apply the role of previous trauma (from birth or other events) and how it can potentially impact future pregnancies and births.

Class 8: Beyond PMAD’s

  1.  Describe the basic kinds of care that new parents need and often don’t receive.
  2.   Compare the various roles a clinician can play when treating the postpartum parent.
  3.   Analyze emergent situations when more than outpatient care is needed.

Class 9: Ethical and Legal Considerations in ART

  1. Assess ethical situations that arise in this work and utilize a construct for managing them.
  2.   Explain the overlap between the emerging legal field and ethical framework within this work.
  3.   Prepare scripts to assist in dealing with common ethical challenges in this work, in particular with third-party consultations.

Class 10: Comorbidities with Reproductive Psychology

  1. Identify when self-disclosure can be therapeutically beneficial.
  2.   Prepare a self-care plan as a psychologist who might be struggling with reproduction.
  3.   Explain how substance use and the deregulation of substances can impact both a pregnancy and a newborn.

Deadline for Registration: The deadline for the Wednesday cohort is August 28th.

Cancellation policy: Participants will be granted a full refund if registration is canceled at least 7 days in advance of the first class; after this time, your registration fee may be applied to a future CE program upon request. If the program is canceled by the instructors for any reason, a full refund will be granted.
